But he did mention

09月 2nd, 2010

‘You started the subject. I was just getting interested.’ ‘I’ll never mention it again…thirty-eight other cases were taken into consideration in sentencing her to six months – golly!’ But he did mention it again, some ten days later, as we were lying on the roof of the house, sunbathing and watching through a telescope the Agricultural Show which was in progress in the park below us. It was a modest two-day show serving the neighbouring parishes, and surviving more as a fair and social gathering than as a centre of serious competition. A ring was marked out in flags, and round it had been pitched half a dozen tents of varying size; there was a judges’ box and some pens for livestock; the largest marquee was for refreshments, and there the farmers congregated in numbers. Preparations had been going on for a week. ‘We shall have to hide,’ said Sebastian as the day approached. ‘My brother will be here. He’s a big part of the Agricultural Show.’ So we lay on the roof under the balustrade. Brideshead came down by train in the morning and lunched with Colonel Fender, the agent. I met him for five minutes on his arrival. Anthony Blanche’s description was peculiarly apt; he had the Flyte face, carved by an Aztec. We could see him now, through the telescope, moving awkwardly among the tenants, stopping to greet the judges in their box, leaning over a pen gazing seriously at the cattle. ‘Queer fellow, my brother,’ said Sebastian.

to analyze imperfect

09月 2nd, 2010

But — second — there is nothing to be inferred from this state of affairs, beyond the gospel truth that many are called but few are chosen, and that, as Cardinal Newman remarked, in effect, no matter how you slice it, the few can never mean the many. Surely that circumstance doesn’t make our enterprise futile, any more than the odds against grace invalidate the practice of religion. If anything, it validates us; we can say (again with Newman) that since we’ve no way of knowing which of our parishioners God has elected, we pray for all of them. In fact, at the end of each semester’s work I like to pass on to my apprentice writers Samuel Beckett’s favorite quotation from St. Augustine. Referring to the thieves who were crucified along with Jesus, Augustine writes, “Do not despair; one thief was saved. Do not presume; one thief was damned.” The advice applies both to our students vis-à-vis their literary aspirations and to us vis-à-vis our students — though in neither case are the odds anything like as good as fifty-fifty.

Having acknowledged this state of affairs, I find myself believing that the right response to it — on the part of those who preside over even our “advanced” studio courses, not to mention the less advanced ones — is a particular concern to appraise the manuscripts in hand in terms of the existing corpus of literature; to analyze imperfect solutions of particular “executive problems,” as Cleanth Brooks calls them, by comparison to perfect, or at least successful, solutions of similar problems. This is one of the obvious ways to turn a practicum course in fiction-writing into an adjunct to general literary study; it might be small consolation to students with more ambition than ability, but it’s some justification for our ministering to them, if it’s done right.

Clearly it is not very helpful to say to a student “Kafka did this same sort of thing, but a lot more brilliantly.” The student knows that already.* And comparison to the great can be a put-down even in its more generous forms: Wilfred Sheed reports Edmund Wilson’s habit, in conversation, of prefacing a criticism with something like “Now see here, Sheed, this is where you and Tolstoy go wrong. . .” On the other hand, it can surely be illuminating, and may even be consoling, to be reminded that the problems of narrative strategy we wrestle with as apprentices have been famously wrestled with by our distinguished predecessors, and not always perfectly successfully.

In the severe winter, another snowstorm attacked the whole world.

08月 25th, 2010

In the severe winter, another snowstorm attacked the whole world.
Soaring above the boundless snowfield, a male eagle was for only one aim: the food.
This strong eagle hunted for the food with his keen eyes, but what jumped into his view was just the endless snow.
The air temperature suddently dropped, the originally thick features of the male eagle turned very thin and weak. Helplessly and hopelessly he uttered a long and loud cry and landed on the cliff.

The male eagle had already flied for one whole day, yet hunting nothing…. Time changed back to the day before. After watching her husband fly away from the nest, the female eagle gently and softly held to her bosom the two baby eagles who were nearly frozen to death. She protected their young bodies under her big wings.

Maybe they could not hold on to the arrival of the spring, but the female eagle thought what if their father could bring back the food? Maybe there was still a gleam of hope.
One baby eagle made a feeble cry, which the other one even couldn’t make.

Nearby the female eagle there was a dead rabbit, which became the prey of the male eagle before the mountain was covered with the snow. Now this prey, which sustained the family of four for ten days, had turned into a skeleton from which all the blood and flesh was taken out. At the end of that short day, which seemed like a long life, the female eagle still couldn’t see her husband come back, obviously feeling that one baby eagle, who scrunched up under her lukewarm feathers, became increasingly ice-cold.

Rather than look at helplessly her two babies die in succession, the female eagle thought she should do something. She pulled apart her own chest with the sharp beaks, the feathers that fell off her body being blowed here and there by the icy wind. With feeble strength, she told her last baby who was still at the verge of death: “Eat me…”. Outside, the male eagle, who stood for a long time keeping close watch on the food, shook out the snow accumulated in her wings. After making a yowl, he made his best efforts to unfold two wings, flinging into the sky. He overlooked the land, which was still a vast expanse of whiteness. Suddenly, a leaden object jumped into his eyes.

The male eagle nosed down to look on it carefully. That was another gray rabbit.
The male eagle jumped on the rabbit.
At that moment, the rabbit didn’t hide or escape, but crept tightly upon the snowfield.

The male eagle seized the rabbbit with sharp craws and killed it. When getting ready to fly away, the scene before his eyes made him startled. Just now under the body of the old gray rabbit lay four stiff baby rabbits…. Love is broad and profoud, yet also cruel.

What do Blood Sugar Level Ranges Mean and Testing Explained

04月 28th, 2010

Normal blood sugar levels keep us healthy, fit and assist in us living a well balanced life. Without average glucose level maintenance, people would not be able to function properly. Humans would lack energy and not be able to move at a normal pace causing us to lose out on life. Therefore, it is essential to check your blood sugar and make sure your glucose levels are correct at all times. For glucose is the main source of energy for us all.

Glucose is a form of sugar that travels throughout the bloodstream. It is produced after absorbing carbohydrates from the intestines into the bloodstream after a meal. Insulin is then secreted by the pancreas in response to this detected increase in blood sugar. Insulin is released whenever there is a rise in the amount of glucose maintaining and regulating your glucose levels. If you are someone who has a dip in glucose levels then you should test your glucose levels on a regular basis.

Normal blood glucose levels range from 70mg 150mg. Glucose levels are generally lower in the morning prior to food consumption and rise as the day continues. The food we eat modifies the glucose levels causing climbs and fall throughout the entire day. If your glucose level falls below 70mg it is considered dangerously low. When blood sugar levels are extremely low it is called, hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia triggers you to suffer become lethargic, irritable, tired, and at times, you may pass out. In addition, if you repeatedly suffer from hypoglycemia it may lead to permanent eye, kidney, and nerve damage. Furthermore, if glucose levels are above 150 mg, then complications may ensue too. For glucose levels over 150 mg is called, hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia initiates frequent urination, hunger even after eating, dry mouth and increased thirst. As a result, you must be aware of glucose levels at all times for either high or low glucose levels may cause irreversible damage if not taken care of immediately.

Effective means to monitoring your glucose levels is through various glucose level tests available today. One form of glucose testing is an oral glucose tolerance test. This is a test that measures glucose levels after drinking sugary drinks containing glucose. Another kind of test is a fasting blood glucose test. Fasting glucose testing is administered to check glucose levels after an 8 hour fast. Normal levels for this test are between 70mg 99mg. Random blood sugar testing is a third option. The random blood sugar testing monitors glucose levels at arbitrary intervals throughout the day. Whether meals have been consumed or not, and the time meals are devoured does not affect the random testing. Normal glucose readings for the random testing are 70mg 125mg. Also, postprandial blood sugar testing may be administered within 2 hours after meals. Normal blood glucose levels with the postprandial testing should be 70mg 125mg.

It is recommended to see a doctor whenever you are unsure about your glucose levels and need testing. For your doctor will perform the proper glucose testing most suitable for you ensuring your needs are met. The physician will be able to evaluate the testing results and assist you with follow up, prescribe medications if need be, and offer life changing recommendations to certify you live a long, healthy, happy life.

04月 28th, 2010

Motivation is a must if you are going to be successful in your weight loss journey. In addition to getting the right program that works for your lifestyle you have to find ways to stay motivated so you see yourself through to your realistic goal that you have set for yourself.

As a weight loss consultant I teach people many different ways to stay motivated. Just as everyone is different and everyone needs to follow a weight loss plan specifically built for their personal lifestyle everyone finds motivation in different ways. I wanted to share with you my top 5 motivational weight loss tips in hopes that you too will find motivation and apply it to your weight loss plan.

Motivation Tip 1: In order to keep your focus on your desire to lose weight make a list of all the reasons why you want to lose weight. Keep it is plain site, tape it to your mirror in your bathroom and read them each morning when you wake up. If you are in your car a lot and you tend to eat fast food put a copy in your car. Tape it to your steering wheel or visor.

Motivation Tip 2: If you are looking to lose a lot of weight such as 100 pounds. Break out your calendar and set your goals. Be very realistic here. Example your current weight is 190 pounds you ultimate goal is 130. Let’s say it is January 1st set your first goal of 15 pounds then realistically plan for that and give it a date. Say March 5th (this will give you 9 weeks to lose 15 pounds). Set shorter lower mile stones at first to give you momentum then spread it out a little as you go.

Motivation Tip 3: Plan a treat for yourself when you have had a great week. Make it non food related such as get a pedicure, facial, buy some make up. Anything that will help make you feel even better about yourself and your great progress.

Motivation Tip 4: Take a picture of yourself in a swimsuit or something that will show your body better. Each month on the same date take another picture in the same outfit. Doing this will make you feel great seeing how baggy the outfits gets each month, keep the pictures close by so you can look at them. Best place it to post them on your bathroom mirror, the reason I say that is you will see them every morning and that will remind you to make the best choices you can each day.

Motivation Tip 5: Read inspirational stories of other people who have lost weight. Do read into how they did it just read about their success for what it is success. Every person is different so the plan that someone follows doesn’t mean it will work for anyone. If you hire a weight loss consultant (recommended) ask them to hook you up with other clients for a support group they should be more than happy to do that and the other clients would like it too.

In conclusion there are many ways to find motivation for weight loss. As a consultant I have found that these 5 tips listed above have proven to work for several clients over and over again. Feel free to contact me for more motivational tips if you are looking for additional resources.

5 Easy Steps to the Correct Golf Grip

04月 28th, 2010

The correct golf grip is probably one of the most overlooked fundamentals in the game of golf. Far too many amateurs are unaware of the importance of this. If you don’t have the correct golf grip you run the risk of having a very flawed golf swing and will create some shots that will damage your round every time out. Follow this step by step plan and you will have a solid technique to work from which will improve your game no end.

1) Take the club with your top hand and place the handle diagonally from the top join of your index finger down through your palm and a few centimetres higher than the your wrist (little finger side). Now wrap your hand around the club. Your thumb should be resting on top of the club.

2) You now have two choices (the most popular grip techniques) the interlock grip or the overlay grip. First of all rest your bottom hand on top of the thumb of your top hand use the lifeline on your bottom hand as the point at which you place it. At this point you can either rest your little finger of your bottom hand on the index finger of the top hand, or, interlock the same two fingers. Try both out and see which is more comfortable for you. Neither is better than the other but you want a feeling of unity so that you feel you can control the club.

3) Now you may need some slight adjusting of both hands. Locate the ‘v’ between your thumb and index finger on both hands. They are upside down as you look at them have the point of the v on both hands point toward your chin.

4) The importance of point two is that you can alter the type of shot you create depending upon the position of these v’s. The further toward your back shoulder you point them the ‘stronger’ your grip is and the more knuckles you will see on your left hand. This can help create more distance but has been known to add more slice. The opposite tends to reduce distance and create more of a hook. More advanced players play around with this to help fashion fade or draw shots. Be aware of these factors and play around with this to see what suits your game.

5) The correct golf grip is not complete without applying the right amount of pressure. It is too tempting to really grab hold of a club and choke it to death you’d think that would help you get more distance. Wrong. Tense muscles reduce the freedom and rhythm of your swing which is where real club head speed comes from. A well known analogy for the right pressure is to hold the club as if you were holding a small bird without trying to hurt it.

Use these pointers as the basis of a solid and correct golf grip. If you’ve been gripping it any old way then you will notice a big difference in your play and will become a better golfer for it.

How Weight Loss Surgery Can Save A Life

04月 28th, 2010

Weight loss surgery is a solution for obesity, a medical condition of excess body fat that reduces life expectancy and contributes to the likelihood of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea problems, certain types of cancer, hypertension, high cholesterol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and osteoarthritis. Obesity is considered an epidemic in America, affecting one third of the population.

Bariatric weight loss surgery, a term for all weight loss surgery, is recommended for those perilously obese. The U.S. National Institutes of Health recommends it based on a body mass index of 40. Generally, surgery reduces stomach size either with an implanted medical device, gastric banding or with gastric bypass surgery, which removes a portion of the stomach. After surgery, weight loss happens rapidly, and long-term benefits include improved health. Studies show that both cardiovascular and mortality risk improve from 20 to 40 percent after the success of surgery.

In particular, two procedures, the Roux En Y Bypass Procedure and the Duodenal Switch Procedure, are gaining popularity.

Roux En Y Gastric Bypass Procedure

This procedure uses small incisions to alter stomach size. The surgeon uses a surgical telescope connected to a video camera, watching the surgery on a video screen. Although this surgery is difficult because of the limited access to the stomach, it has benefits like a shorter hospital stay, less discomfort, quicker recovery, less scars and less risk of a hernia. Patients can expect a 71 percent weight loss.

Duodenal Switch Procedure

This surgery reconfigures the small intestine, creating two paths and a general channel. The short path, the digestive loop, bypasses food in the stomach to the general channel while the long path, the biliopancreatic loop, transports bile to the general channel. This reconfiguration reduces fat absorption and calorie intake.

After weight loss surgery, eating habits have to be changed because of the modified gastrointestinal tract. Each dietary guideline is slightly different based on the procedure performed. Generally, solid foods have to be masticated and fluids avoided during meals. Many foods previously enjoyed have to be completely omitted, specifically high sugar foods like candies, pastries and desserts, carbonated drinks, high calorie supplement drinks and foods, high fat and high fiber foods and alcoholic beverages. In addition, snacking between meals has to be limited.

Recovery rates vary depending on general physical health. The majority of bariatric weight loss surgery patients return to work after six weeks, but those who have had Roux En Y Gastric Bypass Procedure often return to work after only a couple of weeks.

How to Avoid Brew Making Bungles and Mug Mix Ups

04月 28th, 2010

Personalised mugs are great because they tick so many boxes! That’s why we’re going to go in to a bit of detail on why we love them so much in this article. When it comes to office practicality, personalised mugs are brilliant, but they make thoughtful mementos too.

Clean Your Own

Washing up is a sore point in many UK offices and it’s mainly because people don’t clean their own mugs, instead they let them pile up and get grotty every single day. If you are sick of washing other peoples’ mugs on a daily basis, why not get yourself (and your work mates) personalised mugs and you won’t have to worry about washing up after everyone all the time. The rule can just be, if it has your name on it, you wash it, thus ensuring everyone just washes their own!

It can make things much simpler and ensures that everyone plays their part without any stuffy cleaning rotas or other tedious washing up schedules. It can be hard to remember who likes their tea in the Mickey Mouse mug and who has theirs in the one with flowers on it, but personalised mugs solve that problem easily because they have names printed right on to them.

They also come in tons of different designs so you can get mugs to match peoples’ interests such as an undersea motif for someone who likes fishing or diving, or football design for the footie fanatic. If you all wanted uniform plain mugs or modern designs those are available too.

A Recipe Reminder

According to some studies on the human brain, having your own specific mug could also help people remember how you like your tea. We say this because some studies show that we remember things best when we associate other things with them. So you might remember the name ‘Roseanne’ by thinking of the flower ‘a rose’ or remember someone is called ‘Thomas’ by thinking of the childhood character Thomas the Tank Engine.

Some schools of memory study recommend that you imagine yourself on a trip and along the way you place things you must remember. In tests people who use this ‘telling a story’ or ‘journey’ style way of remembering always outperform people who try to remember a list of objects by name.

This associative way of memorising things could sub-consciously help people remember how you like your tea, be it one spoon of sugar, or two. Once they’ve asked you once or twice they’ll associate the mug itself with whether you take milk or sugar and by looking at the mug trigger memories of what needs to go in to it.

Having names neatly emblazoned on personalised mugs can also clear up any mug mix-ups so you won’t be drinking anyone else’s tea or coffee anymore, just your own, how you like it in a mug with your name on it.

A Keepsake Namesake

If you’re new to an office there’s another reason that personalised mugs can be a great idea. If you have a mug on your desk bearing your name people won’t forget it as easily or feel awkward talking to you when they can’t remember what you’re called. They’ll be able to just glance at your mug and know exactly what to call you when they ask for your help on the latest project!

Equally, if you’re new to a role and have trouble remembering names why not get everyone in your room personalised mugs as a gift, you can get them for as little as 5 each and they’ll help you to remember names too. Not to mention all of the benefits we’ve already talked about.

Great Gifts

As well as being functional, attractive and very personal, personalised mugs do still make brilliant gifts too. So, if you have a friend who is leaving where you work and going away to start a new job, buying him or her a personalised mug is a great idea; that way when he or she gets to their new position they’ll reap all the benefits we’ve talked about in this article.

Personalised mugs also make good presents for Father’s Day and Mother’s Day and make cute little birthday gifts. You can buy them on their own and fill them with somebody’s favourite chocolates, mini-liquors, home baked cookies or even seeds to plant out in the garden creating a really simple and elegant present with a personal focus.

Getting Personal offer unique high quality gifts & personalised gifts at affordable prices, delivered quickly and guaranteed with a smile. To explore our range of personalised mugs further, please visit our website at http://www.gettingpersonal.co.uk.
